Okay everyone, you’ve been waiting for it, so now’s your chance!! In the past, you may have not been able to root your Droid for some ridiculous reason; the program could fail, a file could not be found, whatever. Well I’m here to tell you that I have made my code light, efficient, and super fool-proof so that essentially all errors are now PEBKAC!! AWESOME!!! 😀 😀
Anyway, you are probably wanting to see the awesomeness happen. Unfortunately, as of tonight I don’t have a video of Soup or Root 2.06 Beta in action (plus I don’t have a Droid anymore, that’s where donating comes in to play! :D) so you’ll have to wait for that to come out in the future. But don’t worry, I will still give you simple instructions as always!!
How to Root:
- Download Soup or Root 2.06 Beta Here!!
- Turn on USB Debugging (NOT USB STORAGE) on your Droid!! (remember, Droid 1 only)
- If you haven’t installed Motorola’s Drivers yet, click “Install Drivers” in Soup or Root.
- Once the Driver Installation completes, make sure your Droid is plugged in and press “Root Me!!!”
- When you are rooting, nothing will appear to be happening. Don’t worry, just wait!! Don’t press “Root Me” more times before the confirmation window pops up to let you know rooting is done.
- Check to see if Superuser is in your app tray on your Droid. What do you know, it’s there!! You are now rooted 🙂 If not, then reboot your Droid and try again.
- Donate to RDKamikaze for all his hard work into this project!!
Ok, just one question. If you want to un-root your phone, how do you do that?
Un-rooting your phone requires you to reflash your phone with the stock ROM using RSD Lite.
There is also another method which just requires you to download a zip file to your sdcard and reboot into recovery that works.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/13466-how-back-stock-no-su-no-busybox-etc.html
You can use the rom manager to download the stock rom for the droid if you want to unroot, it’s the easiest way, and gets your rom back to factory in case you have to send it back.
OK, thanks I will try that!
i reset my phone so everything i had got taken off of it, i followed all the instructions to root downloaded the latest drivers, and ran the root, i have superuser permissions still, but nothing is acting like its rooted such as rom manager, or Barnacle tether. can you help me out?
Go ahead and restart your Droid and try again. Which phone are you using to root? Maybe try the program again and let me know how it goes 🙂
im currently using a Motorola DROID 1, with the stock 2.2 FROYO installed. running Launcher Pro for a home. and i originally had Easy Root before going into 2.2 but quickly realised it didnt work with the 2.2 upgrade, so i had super user permissions installed for a while, but its just sitting there not doing anything. so When i factory reset my phone it was still on my system, and upon running your root method its still obviously there, and nothing is still working. i certainly miss the only 2.1 haha this 2.2 upgrade has just been a neuissance trying to root
Just making sure on the Droid, I’ve had some people try before haha!! Did you just do the update from google for 2.2 or how did you get there? I recommend starting fresh with the 2.2 .sbf file and RSD Lite so that you can start from scratch and ensure proper rootage.
Anyway, it sounds like it didn’t work so go ahead and try to root again with Soup or Root 2.06 and let me know what happens. If nothing, then try an older version of Soup or Root and it should work.
HI , i have downloaded 2.6, my computer will not let me install motorala drivers. However the window to install the driver does pop up; when I click to install drivers nothing pops up, so then I decided to hit root my phone, then the window pops up now rooting phone make sure usb storage is off, etc etc. Then another window pops up saying, if you do not see superuser in your app tray to restart my droid. I have done this many times and I yet have found no luck in rooting my phone. So my questions are, how do I install the drivers, and if it does work where would my app tray be located in my phone to see superuser
Try the older version of Soup or Root, version 2.04 or prior. Those should let you install the Moto Drivers that you need and then you can root from there 🙂
i have used the older version of root and its awesome i love it thanks:) i know we already touched on the subject of UNrooting a phone via zip update of flashing a rom. anything involviong a command prompt using the zip kinda scares me cause im not that familiar with it. and from what i have gathered from reading up on rooting the most likely reason people brick their phones is from flashing modified roms. can someone possible expound on the subject of FLASHING a rom to restore a factory set droid after its already been rooted.
one more total noob question. im assuming everything will be erased after an unroot is performed. which im chill with BUT im also assuming froyo will be gone. does anyone have a link to a manual froyo update and maybe an explanation on how to apply it.
thanks like i said i love what you have acomplished with this program!!
Does not work with windows 7!
It does work with Windows 7, I have tested it on two versions myself and had others be successful 🙂 If one version does not work for you, try 2.04 Beta or 1.8rA stable.
Rooted successfully but wasn’t notified when it was finished. Waited for 15 minutes.
will this also work on FRG83D ????
I have heard from a few people that it does, but have not tried it myself yet.
I have a question, i was using PDA net to access my phone through my computer since i downloaded soup or root it wont allow me access my phone’s files through my computer. Any idea what i need to do?
Worked for me on the 2nd try. Droid 1 running FRG83D.
Thanks for the application!
Yo! Absolutely great tool! However my wifi quit working after rooting my Motorola Droid. Does this mean that after rooting I need to install a new wifi manager and if yes who do you recommend and if no how do I get wifi to work again?
Is there another way to download the drivers? I click on it to download and nothing happens.
Is there a back out procedure to restore your phone to original “non-root” after a successful root? Is that basically a restore-to-factory reset?
Never mind. I just saw the top post that answered my question.
This worked great on my Droid 1 running FRG83D. It took a couple of times but it still worked. And I had to install an updated version of Superuser after.
In future releases I would recommend the option of saving the log. I watched the command prompt do its things but sure would love to study it afterward for my own edufication. I know nothing about development but I’m fascinated by it.
Worked so easy, that I happily donated immediately after installing Superuser. I had worried about bricking the phone, but this is very simple.
How do I check if the Motorola’s Drivers have been installed on my PC?
Thanks,
CJ
Once you plug in your device the Motorola utility should pop up in your system tray in the bottom right letting you know you have the device plugged in.
Thank you so much for the wonderful application. It rooted my Droid 1 2.2.1 FRG83D in just one click.
CJ
This worked great. I actually used 2.04. I had some sort of Motorola drivers installed already because I had used RSD lite with another Droid, but I downloaded through the tool anyway. I tried a couple times but Superuser never installed, so I installed that from the market and found my Droid had been successfully rooted after all.
HAHA yes yes yes my root is back!!! FU verizon!! you bandwidth limiting nazis. Thank you Sir, I was happy to donate and everyone else should too who took advantage of this mans brilliance!
It’s great to read that this has worked for a number of people but I’ve had no such luck. I’m trying to root my gf’s Droid1 but it has been all fail. I believe I have the latest Motorola drivers installed (4.9) that I grabbed from their site, usb debugging is enabled and everything seems to work as advertised except, the superuser icon never appears. It’s disheartening because I just don’t know why it’s not working. I thought it was because she’s on FRG83D like many others but this method has worked for that version of Android 2.2. If anyone could shed some light on this I’d appreciate it.
I’m having the same issue….got a new d1 replacement with 2.2.1 and am having no luck getting root to work
Got a “System updates available” notice for Android update (FRG83G).
Will the upgrade unroot my Droid 1?
My superuser didn’t work after upgraded to FRD83G.
Reinstalled superuser using “Soup or Root 2.06”, my phone is rooted again. 🙂
Great tool!!!!!
I have a Motorola Droid 1 rooted using Soup or Root and Frg83d. I’ve received the “system update available ” message for Frg83g but the update always aborts, Any ideas?
Droid 1 with 2.2.2
Tried Soup or Root, 3 different versions of it with no luck.
Even tried SuperOneClick.
Can’t get anything to work! From the versions that I could see, it looks like it is not finding my phone. With the latest version I can here the connection to my phone going on and off in my system tray. But it is still not rooted!
Debugging is on and I have the latest drivers installed. I don’t see an option for the USB storage, I guess because I don’t have an SD card in.
Any suggestions?
Does the motorola driver have to be installed to my pc or my phone? Because I don’t know what’s going on I installed the driver to my pc I then tried to root my phone then it restarted as but the superuser never popped up in my apps I’m using a metropcs galaxy indulge 4g
